The Porsche Museum

If you love Porsche and the cars they make (and I’m assuming you do if you’re reading this), then you may want to schedule a trip to Stuttgart, Germany.  Here, you’ll find the Zuffenhausen district, which is where the Porsche company is headquartered.  porsche-museum-300x200 The Porsche MuseumIn addition to the plant and the main offices, this district is also home to the Porsche Museum.  This is easily one of the coolest places for Porsche fans.

The concept of the Porsche museum is fairly old.  In fact, the original museum opened back in 1976 on a small side street near the company’s main factory.  This museum was very small.  In fact, it only had about 20 different exhibits, and the museum would have to rotate one out to set up a new exhibit.  This was actually part of the design—Porsche wanted a museum that changed displays on a regular basis since they knew they couldn’t build a museum big enough to display their stock of more than 300 different cars.

This original museum was used for years, but in the mid-2000s, Porsche decided they needed a new, more impressive museum.  The plan was to build it near the Mercedes-Benz museum in the Killesberg district.  However, in 2006, Mercedes-Benz opened their new museum in east Stuttgart, so Porsche decided that instead of building in Killesberg, they would simply expand and upgrade their current museum.  They started out with a 60 million euro budget, but by opening day (29 January 2009), that had grown to 100 million.

This new museum is huge.  It includes 80 different exhibits spread across 5,600 square meters.  The museum displays many of Porsche’s greatest cars and prototypes, plus gives a detailed history of the company and its successes.  I’m already planning my trip to Germany just to see this amazing place!
