The Porsche Panamera

On April 19, 2009, Porsche unveiled their newest four-door luxury sedan: the Porsche Panamera.  porsche-panamera-300x166 The Porsche PanameraI’m very excited about this new car.  There’s actually a four-wheel drive version available, which means a lot of power.  Porsche fans will have three different engine options (a 3.6L V6, a 4.8 L V8, and a turbocharged 4.8 L V8), plus I understand Porsche is even working on a hybrid version of the vehicle.  Many people consider the Panamera to be the actual product of the 989 concept that Porsche was working on back in the 1980s.  I’m not sure how much of that concept is actually used in the Panamera since it’s over 20 years old, though.

While Porsche is calling the Panamera a sedan, I think it actually looks more like a little hatchback.  It even has a rear liftgate and a really large trunk (much bigger than most sedans).  Why call it a sedan then?  Well, from what I understand, it’s because hatchbacks aren’t really selling so well, so it’s just a form of marketing!

The Panamera, which gets its name from the Carrera Panamericana race, is being assembled at the Leipzig plant, with the engines being built in Stuttgart and the body painted in Hannover.  This may sound like a strange way of building a car, but many vehicles are actually created in pieces like this.

Porsche plans to product 20,000 Panameras a year, which is a good number.  The first Panamera, as I said earlier, was unveiled in April at the Shanghai Auto Show.  Porsche did something a bit unique here…they actually put the car in the Shanghai World Financial Center’s freight elevator and sent it all the way to the 94th floor!
