I always find it interesting when Porsche follows a trend.
After all, the company is so popular that they really don’t need to cash in on any fad. However, in 2002, Porsche decided to produce an SUV, following the trend started by many other vehicle manufacturers. Did Porsche need an SUV? I don’t know, maybe they did. The Porsche Cayenne has sold quite well, so perhaps it was a good move.
The Cayenne is a five-seat luxury SUV. It uses the frame and doors from Volkswagen, but everything else is done by Porsche. The base model of the Cayenne features a 3.6 liter VR6 engine that can produce up to 290 horsepower. While it’s not as fast as many of Porsche’s other vehicles, it can go from 0 to 97 km in about seven and a half seconds, which is pretty darn fast for a vehicle aimed at soccer moms and others with kids!
One of the coolest Cayenne SUVs, in my opinion, is the Cayenne S Transsyberia. This is a racing vehicle that was built specifically for the Transsyberia rally—yes, a racing SUV! I had no idea such a thing existed! Only 26 of the Cayenne S Transsyberia were made, although a street version was later built. Sales of the street version began in January of 2009.
There are several other models of the Cayenne, including a hybrid and a new generation of Cayennes are set to debut in 2010. I can’t wait to see what Porsche has in store for these new SUVs.
